Eight current and former Washington rowers finished up competition at the World Rowing Cup II regatta Sunday on the Danube River in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria. Five of the eight Huskies rowed in A finals.
Linz-Ottensheim will serve as the host site of the 2019 World Rowing Championships.
Great Britain's Fiona Gammond rowed in the bow seat in the GB four that took second place in the A final, coming in just under two seconds behind Australia. Gammond's boat led through the first 1,000 meters, but the Aussies overcame them to win the race.
Former UW captain Jacob Dawson '16 helped his Great Britain four to a fourth-place finish in the A final. The British crew finished a little over a second behind Germany for third place, and also beat another British crew.
Two of Washington's Dutchmen rowed in the men's eight A final, but in two different boats as the Netherlands entered two crews. In the "A" entry, Simon van Dorp '20 rowed in the four seat as his team took third place. UW teammate Michiel Mantel '19 sat in the bow of the second Netherlands eight, which finished fourth.
In the women's double sculls, sophomore-to-be Sofia Asoumanaki '21, the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year this spring, earned a fourth-place finish in the A final. Her boat trailed the rest of the six-entry field at 1,000 and 1,500 meters, but surged to fourth by the finish.
Half of the New Zealand women's four were Huskies as Kirstyn Goodger '14 and Phoebe Spoors '17 rowed in the bow and two seat. That crew finished fifth in the B final.
Croatian Ivan Piton '17 qualified for the C final in the men's pair, but, along with his partner, wasn't able to finish his race.
