NCAA Campus Visit Rules Change
April 25, 2018 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies have changed how recruit visits to campus will function, in accordance with recent NCAA rule changes on the subject. Recruits will still be able to visit campus prior to September 1 of that recruit's junior year of high school, but Washington coaches will no longer be a part of that process. Recruits are welcome to visit campus and receive full tours from trained UW students, with more information available online.
Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore was glad for the change, saying that "there has long been a call from the majority of coaches to try and slow down the recruiting process so that prospective student-athletes are closer to an age where it makes sense for them to be making a major life decision.
"This rule change is a move towards slowing that process. This definitely helps both parties and now it is on coaches, at the club level, high school, and college, to help educate parents and prospects on the rules and how to navigate the process best for the student-athlete."
The NCAA rule changes now in affect mean that coaches and players already in the women's soccer program at Washington cannot be a part of any unofficial visits recruits may wish to take to campus until September 1 of the recruit's junior year. After that date, coaches are allowed to take part in such visits. Any visits prior to that date are still permissible, but cannot involve members of the women's soccer program.
These changes will allow future student-athletes to have more control over direct communication with schools they are interested in. In this way, coaches, prospects, and families can more accurately assess for themselves if a university fits academically, athletically, and culturally.
"Moving the prospective student-athlete timeline back to align with their peers is an important step in changing the pressures associated with recruiting," said Washington's Associate Athletic Director of Compliance, Jackie Mynarski. "These changes reflect a shift for prospective student-athletes to take their time to make a well-informed decision about college."
