Huskies Can’t Find the Offense in 71-45 Loss at Stanford
January 14, 2018 | Women's Basketball
PALO ALTO – Washington played solid defense but could not find the offense to go along with it losing 71-45 to Stanford on Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion.
The Huskies drop to 6-11 on the season and to 0-6 in conference play while the Cardinal move to 11-7 and to 5-1 in the Pac-12.
Washington was led by Jenna Moser, who had 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Hannah Johnson added 10 points and five rebounds, scoring in double-figures for the fourth time in the last five games. However, the Huskies struggled from the field, hitting a season-low 29.3% and connecting on 7-of-29 from three-point range.
The defense was there for Washington—especially in the first half. The Huskies limited Stanford to just 31 points in the opening 20 minutes, forcing 10 turnovers and keeping the game close despite struggling from the field. But the Cardinal found their shooting touch in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 39-22 in the final 20 minutes to pull away for the win.
Alanna Smith led the way for Stanford with 19 points, adding nine rebounds. Brittany McPhee contributed 15 points while DiJonai Carrington scored 11.
Neither team could gain an edge early in the game as the score was just 7-6 in Stanford's favor at the midway point of the first quarter. But Washington went cold and went without a point over a six-minute stretch while Stanford stretched the lead to 11-6. But the Huskies got a big bucket by Alexis Griggsby to end the streak and pull back to within three with 1:36 to go. Kierra Collier would drain a three from the top of the arc to make it a 15-11 Stanford lead after one.
Stanford opened the second quarter with a pair of fastbreak layups to extend the lead to 19-11. Jenna Moser knifed through the defense to get Washington's first bucket of the quarter. But Stanford answered with a 10-2 run over the next 6:30 to take a commanding 31-16 lead with 1:02 left.
The Huskies weren't done, though, closing out the half on a 7-0 run including a rare five-point play. Hannah Johnson drained a three pointer as Moser was run over setting a screen. The officials counted the three-pointer and awarded Moser two free throws which she converted easily. On the next possession, Stanford turned the ball over and UW made them pay with a Johnson getting an offensive rebound and putback to make it 31-23 at the break.
After the teams traded baskets to open the second half, Washington went cold again from the field, failing to score for over four minutes. During that time, Stanford stretched the lead back to 13 with a 5-0 run to make it 40-27 with 5:35 left in the quarter. Moser ended the run with a bucket but Stanford closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run and led 47-31 after three.
Moser opened the fourth quarter with a three only to see Stanford respond with a 10-3 run over the next three minutes which gave the Cardinal a 57-37 lead with six minutes left and they cruised from there.
Washington struggled on the boards against the Cardinal as the Huskies were out-rebounded 43-28 which contributed to a 12-4 Stanford edge in second-chance points. Despite forcing 20 Stanford turnovers, Washington could only turn those into 13 points.
