Get To Know Your Rising Seniors: Shannon Simon
May 30, 2017 | Women's Soccer
During the offseason we asked each of our rising seniors a few questions in order to get to know them a little better. Today we spoke with Shannon Simon, who was voted a team captain and went on to lead the Huskies last season in goals, points, shots and shots on goal. The attacking midfielder has netted 14 goals during her career with Washington, adding eight assists in 63 games played. The Torrance, Calif. native has been named All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and to the All-Pac-12 Second Team, and has already entered the record books at UW, currently sitting at 9th in program history with 168 career shots.
What would you do on a free Saturday here around the city?
A free Saturday for me would consist of playing a little bit of footy in the morning, some sort of adventure like a hike, museum, or exploring a new place (shout out to the link and bus system), and ending the day with homework because #StudentAthlete.
Where is your favorite place to eat here in Seattle and why?
This is a very difficult question to answer because Seattle is filled with a plethora of amazing and unique food places. Yelp has been my reliable companion for every food place decision.
What is your major?
Currently, I am majoring in English with a minor in Law, Societies, and Justice.
What has been your favorite part about living the college life?
My favorite part is getting to live as a student-athlete at the University of Washington. Being a student athlete here is a unique experience. I feel unbelievably blessed and thankful to have the opportunity to make unforgettable memories with some inspiring individuals.
Least favorite?
That at some point living like a student-athlete will have to end.
If you could matchup with anyone in the world for a PK right now just for fun, who would it be and why?
Our team versus FC Barcelona in a PK shootout. So we can say we beat Barcelona and I guess being in the presence of some of the greatest soccer players in the world would not be too shabby.
What has been your most memorable athletic event you've been to at UW and why?
Getting to see any of my fellow student athletes compete is a cool experience, but it was an honor and exciting to watch the women's basketball team compete this year.
Compared to your expectations you had when you first arrived on campus, what has been the most surprising thing about your time at Washington to you?
I did not realize how much I would learn and evolve as a person and soccer player.
Amy is in goal and Lesle is shooting on a PK or free kick, who comes out on top?
I plead the fifth.
What is the most crucial thing you've learned on the soccer field since you've been here?
That what you do and who you are off the field matters just as much as what you do on the field.
What do you want to do once you graduate?
I hope to play professionally and travel the world. Then, at some point go to law school and become a lawyer.
If you could go back in time, what is one piece of advice you would give to yourself as an incoming freshman?
The quest to being the best version of yourself you can possibly be will involve many challenges and being uncomfortable, but adversities are just opportunities to grow and learn. Cherish every single moment because time passes quicker than you can imagine.
