SEATTLE --- Washington picked up a pair of much-needed victories on Friday, beating Gonzaga 6-1 before sweeping Eastern Washington 7-0 on Friday night.
Â
The Huskies wrap up the day with a 5-9 record earning an outdoor victory over the Zags (9-5) before moving inside to defeat the Eagles (2-9).
Â
Washington dropped just two matches on the day, both in the afternoon matchup against Gonzaga. The Huskies pulled out a pair of doubles victories.
Kawika Lam and
Enzo Sommer opened the day with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Zags would get the win at No. 1 doubles to level the match. But despite falling behind early,
Adam Torocsik and
Ewen Lumsden came back for the 6-4 victory.
Â
Lumsden got Washington's first singles point in dominating fashion, making quick work of his opponent in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
Jack Davis added a victory at No. 3 singles by a 6-3, 6-2 count to put UW up 3-0. Gonzaga would get a win at No. 2 singles, but
Ernesto Turegano responded with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles to clinch the match.
Â
Sebastian Hawken won the first of two singles matches in three sets on the day, taking the No. 6 singles match 5-7, 6-3, 10-2.
Enzo Sommer closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles.
Â
The second match of the day didn't start until after 9:00 pm due to a long-running women's match and the previous men's match. But once it did start, it was all Huskies.
Â
Washington rolled in doubles play, sweeping the three matches with relative ease. Lam and Sommer earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2 to kick things off, followed by a 6-3 win by Davis and Foley at No. 1. Lumsden and Torocsik ended things with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Â
Head Coach
Matt Anger juggled his lineup in the singles play, but the Huskies responded with a solid showing. Lam picked up his first singles victory of the year, quickly winning his No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-1. Turegano followed just minutes later with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 with Lumsden recording a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 to clinch the match.
Â
Jack Davis cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles and Torocsik picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5. The final match of the day was a thriller as Hawken again had to play three sets to pick up the victory. Playing at No. 4 singles for the first time this season, lost the first set 6-4 and trailed 5-4 in the second. But he rallied to take the set 7-5, then won the match tiebreaker 10-7.
Â
Washington takes time off for spring break, before hitting the road for a pair of matches in southern California. The Huskies play at Pepperdine on March 24, then take on UC Santa Barbara on March 26.
