Yuan Added To Incoming Freshman Class

SEATTLE – Thursday, head coach Matt Thurmond announced a new member to next season’s incoming class of freshmen, adding Yechun (Carl) Yuan. Yuan is originally from China, but currently attends the Eagles Dream Academy and Lake Mary Prep in Orlando, Fla.

Yuan is a highly rated recruit, coming in at No. 13 by the American Junior Golf Association Polo Boys Ranking of the Class of 2015. He is also ranked No. 22 by the Golfweek Sagarin and No. 25 by the Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings of the Class of 2015.

“We are so thrilled to add Carl to our program,” Thurmond. “It’s rare that we add a player this late in the process and it will be great to have him join us so soon this Fall.”

Yuan has been known among the amateur ranks for several years, qualifying for the U.S. Open Sectionals by winning an event at Timacuan Golf and Country Club in Florida at age 15. He currently holds a World Amateur Golf Ranking of No. 304 in the world.

“Carl has had a lot of success at various levels in many places,” said Thurmond. “He has a great all-around game and huge potential. He also has a great personality and vibe about him. I really enjoyed this recruiting process and I look forward to working to help him reach his goals and dreams.”

Yuan was named honorable mention for 2014 AJGA Rolex All-America Team and in 2015, finished as the runner-up in two big events, the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Innisbrook and the AJGA Puerto Rico Junior Open. He won the Scott Robertson Memorial Golf Tournament back in 2013, finishing at 7-under to prevail by three shots.

Yuan is currently competing in a European PGA Tour event in China, the Shenzhen International. He finished his first round at 1-under and is below the projected cutline.

He’ll join the Dawgs in the fall with fellow freshman Matt Marrese of Sammamish High School who signed his letter of intent with Washington back in November.
