OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Taran Alvelo has been named one of ten finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. The award is designed to honor those seniors who exhibit excellence in the community, classroom, character, and competition. Alvelo has been selected in part due to her focus on using her athletic platform to make a positive impact in her community. Fans are encouraged to vote for Alvelo online.
This season, Alvelo has steadily climbed her way up the Washington record books while leading the Huskies to a top-ten ranking. Alvelo is now fourth in UW history in wins, fourth in strikeouts, and fifth in shutouts. Three times this year she has struck out 15 or more batters in a game, setting a new career high with 15 against Florida before breaking that career high the next day with 16 against Cal State Fullerton.
Alvelo leads the Pac-12 in strikeouts and is fourth in Division I among active players. She is also third in the country among active pitchers in wins. Her 2.09 career ERA is the seventh-lowest in UW history.
Voting for the Senior CLASS award is open to all fans now through May 20. Fans can vote online for Alvelo.
