It was a historic day at the Stanford Invitational Friday as Washington track & field's Olivia Gruver broke the school record, the Pac-12 record, and the collegiate outdoor record at Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field. Gruver cleared 15-feet, 6.25-inches (4.73 meters) to further raise the bar for herself as a current and future star of the sport.
Husky women's tennis keeps rolling, as No. 13 Washington defeated Arizona, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Bill Quillian Tennis Center. With the victory, the Huskies improve to 14-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in Pac-12 play at 4-0. The Washington men's tennis team was also victorious Friday, taking down Utah, 4-2, for its first Pac-12 win of the year.
The No. 7 Washington softball team struck early and held firm in the lead, beating Oregon State 5-2 in the first game of the weekend series. Morganne Flores homered for the second consecutive game, while Sis Bates reached base to leadoff the first and third innings, coming around to score both times.
In their lone home competition of the season, Washington beach volleyball seniors Destiny Julye and Kristen Gengenbacher enjoyed their time in the sun on the shores of Alki Beach but despite their two victories at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, 14th-ranked Arizona was able to hold off the Huskies in a double-header.
The Washington women's golf team is tied for fifth place after the first round of play at the PING ASU Invitational. Senior Wenyung Keh led the way with a bogey-free round of 70. Her 2-under par round puts her in a tie for third place heading into the second round. On the men's side, the Huskies are in fifth place after the completion of the second round of play on Friday at The Goodwin. The Dawgs carded an 11-over round of 291 at Stanford Golf Course and sit at 9-over par for the tournament.
Four Washington pitchers combined to strikeout 14 batters Friday night at Husky Ballpark, but seventh-ranked Oregon State made a first-inning run stand up in a 1-0 shutout in front of 1,483 fans.
