Day Two At 2018 Worlds Features Heat Wins For Huskies
September 10, 2018 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
The second day of the 2018 World Rowing Championships brought more successes for current and former Washington rowers, highlighted by heat victories in the women's double sculls and para-rowing mixed four.
Three UW undergraduates rowed in women's double sculls heats Monday in Plovdiv, Bulgaria: Anna Thornton '19 for Great Britain, Sofia Asoumanaki '21 for Greece and Valentina Iseppi '20 for Italy. In each of the three six-boat heats, the top-two finishers earned spots in the A/B semifinals on Thursday, with the other four having to row in repechages on Wednesday.
In the first heat, Thornton and her partner Charlotte Hodgkins-Byrne, led from start to finish. Gold medalists in the same event at this summer's 2018 World Rowing Under-23 Championships and in the quad sculls at 2017 Under-23s, held off a veteran double from the United States to win in 6:53.28.
In that same heat, Asoumanaki and her Greek teammate finished in sixth place.
In the third women's double sculls heat, Iseppi finished in fourth place. She and her partner were in second place at the halfway point, but were beaten to the finish line by Lithuania and Chile for the second spot. New Zealand led the entire way for the win.
In the women's four, former UW rower Phoebe Spoors '17, representing New Zealand, finished in third place in a heat, good enough to advance directly to the A/B semifinals. Spoors, rowing in the two seat, and her crew finished in 6:34.990, behind the U.S. and China.
Former UW rower Danielle Hansen '16 is competing in two para-rowing events, the first of which – the mixed coxed four – held heats today. In the second of the two heats Monday, the United States four led throughout and won in 7:12.84, 11 seconds ahead of second-place Canada. The win means the U.S. boat has advanced directly to Saturday's A final.
Hansen, a silver medalist at both the 2017 World Championships and the 2016 Paralympics, will also compete in the para-rowing women's pair.
Tuesday is a slow day at the World Championships when it comes to UW rowers and alumni. The only event including a Washington athlete is the women's quad sculls repechage as the Italian boat that includes Chiara Ondoli '18 and Carmela Pappalardo '20, will compete. The Italians will need a top-three finish in the six-boat repechage to qualify for the A/B semifinals.
