Fullerton, Calif. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Washington softball team earned a dominant 13-1, five-inning win over Indiana on the first day of competition at the Judi Garman Classic Friday afternoon in Fullerton, Calif. It was the Huskies' fifth run-rule decision of the season.
Nine different Husky batters tallied at least one base knock as Washington (13-2) boasted double-digit hits for the eighth time this year. Junior Amirah Milloy went 2-for-3 in her first start of the season, knocking out her first career home run and tallying two RBI. Sophomore Morganne Flores crushed a grand slam in the second inning and led the team with five RBI. Sophomore Rachel Ogasawara hit her first home run of her career.
Freshman RHP Taran Alvelo (8-0) earned the win, striking out three while allowing just two hits and one walk.
The Huskies got to work early, scoring a run in the first inning and then unleashing on eight runs in the final two frames. Taylor Van Zee earned an RBI after advancing Trysten Melhart from home. A fielding error by the Hoosiers second baseman allowed Van Zee to reach second.
In the following the inning the Husky offense lit up. Milloy hit a two run homer that plated Maggie Gallagher. Three batters later with bases loaded, Morganne Flores hit a grand slam to extend the lead to 7-0. Two more run was earned two more runs off a Gallagher single allowed Kirtstyn Thomas to cross home plate.
The Dawgs tacked on four more runs in the third and fourth innings. Van Zee had a one 0ut solo home run in the third innings. Sis Bates followed up with a triples and was plated off a sacrifice fly from Flores. In the fourth inning, Ogasawara homered with Milloy on first to score two, upping the Huskies total runs to 14.
Indiana cut into Washington's lead with a run in the final frame of the game, drawing two back-to-back walks and advancing to third on a sacrifice fly. In the next at-bat, the runner on third advanced home on a fielding error by Flores to score the Hoosiers' one and only run of the game.
Washington is back in action at the Judi Garman Classic again on March 4 at 12:30 p.m. when they face Fresno State, followed by a game against Baylor at 5 p.m.
