SEATTLE  – Sacramento State jumped ahead early against the 11
th-ranked Huskies and rode the arms of their pitching staff in a 7-1 victory over Washington in the home opener Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Â
Three Hornets' pitchers held the Huskies (4-4) to just one hit and allowed four base runners on the day. The Huskies' lone run of the night scored with two outs in the ninth inning on a wild pitch.
Â
The Hornets (7-1) scored four times in the third inning and added two more runs in the fifth inning, which proved to be plenty of offensive support for Sac State starter Justin Dillon (2-0). The junior right-hander no-hit Northern Kentucky last week and held Washington State to one hit the previous week. He was equally as tough against the Huskies Friday night.
Â
Dillon allowed one hit and struck out eight over six innings of work. Only three Huskies reached base against him -- via a first inning, two-base error on a
Joey Morgan fly ball to centerfield, a
Jack Meggs second-inning single and a fourth-inning walk to
MJ Hubbs.
Â
Noah Bremer (1-1) got off to a strong start on the hill for the Huskies, but ran into trouble in the third inning. During a downpour, the Hornets' offense sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four times. They pieced together three hits and benefited from four walks.
Â
Ian Dawkins and Devin Lehman singled home the first two runs and Bremer issued a pair of bases-loaded walks to force in the other two runs.
Â
Sac State put two more runs on the scoreboard in the fifth on a two-run double by Brandon Hunley. They were the final runs allowed by Bremer, who gave up six earned runs on six hits, walked five and struck out a pair of Hornets.
Â
Freshman
Chris Micheles pitched strong for the Huskies in three innings of relief work. The Hornets scored an unearned run off of him in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly, but the young lefty worked out the jam and threw perfect innings in the eighth and ninth.
Â
Pinch-hitter
Jacob Hirsh scored the Huskies' lone run. He walked to start the ninth inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Â
The two teams will play a double-header Saturday to make up for the cancelled game on Thursday. Game one is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
