Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium
Located just north of Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, the six court stadium was named in honor of UW Hall of Fame member Bill Quillian ('55) who also coached for the Huskies from 1966 to 1973. The stadium was built in the 1960s and boasts the same surface as those in Nordstrom Tennis Center. Fans can watch all the action from modernized theater seating at the west end of the stadium or from numerous bench seating behind each court's baseline. Few people remember that the seating surrounding the tennis courts at Quillian Stadium were originally the stands for the baseball facility that once sat in the same location.
Bill Quillian has long been associated with tennis at the University of Washington, as a player, a coach and a member of the Husky Hall of Fame. His legacy was honored years ago when the University of Washington tennis courts were named in his memory. The Husky tennis teams make their outdoor home on those courts.
Quillian began his stellar tennis career at Washington in 1952 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship as a freshman with Don Fly. That duo had won the U.S. National Juniors Championship in 1951. Quillian also earned a berth in the NCAA Singles Championships all four years, finishing runner-up in 1955. He is the only Husky to have represented the United States in the Davis Cup, doing so in 1958.
As coach, Quillian compiled a 63-39 record from 1966 to 1973. His winning percentage of .618 and his win total both rank fourth among all Husky tennis coaches.
