Four Huskies Named To Preseason Watch Lists
July 13, 2018 | Football
Four Huskies were named to watch lists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards today, the first day of a two-week stretch that will see the announcement of watch lists for 16 national college football awards.
Jake Browning and Myles Gaskin were named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, while Greg Gaines and Taylor Rapp each earned a spot on the Bednarik Award watch list.
The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Browning, a senior quarterback from Folsom, Calif., enters the 2018 season with 9,104 career passing yards and a UW-record 78 career touchdown passes, with just 24 interceptions. He's been the Husky starter since his true freshman year and was the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2016.
Gaskin, a senior tailback from Lynnwood, Wash., is the nation's top returning rusher in terms of career yards, with 4,055 yards, just 51 yards shy of the Husky career record. He already owns the UW record with 45 career rushing TDs and has topped 1,300 yards in each of his three seasons as the Huskies' top back.
Rapp, a junior defensive back from Bellingham, Wash., was the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2016 before earning first-team All-Pac-12 and Academic All-Pac-12 last year. He has started 22 of 27 games over the last two seasons and has 112 career tackles.
Gaines, a senior defensive lineman from La Habra, Calif., was a second-team All-Pac-12 and Academic All-Pac-12 selection last year. He has started all 27 games the last two years, as well as six more as a freshman in 2015. During that time, the Huskies have had the top defensive in the Pac-12, based on total defense and scoring defense, all three years.
