June 18, 2018 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – Washington's 2018 schedule has been rounded into shape, with a challenging run of nonconference matches leading into the always top-notch Pac-12 slate. The Pac-12 Networks today released its broadcast schedule, with the Huskies leading all conference teams with 19 matches set for live television.
Washington will have plenty of chances to face NCAA Tournament-caliber competition, as the Huskies pursue a 17th-consecutive trip to the postseason. There are no less than twelve 2017 NCAA tourney qualifiers on UW's schedule, for a total of 19 matches.
Fans will get their first chance to check out a new look Husky squad with six new faces when UW opens at home with two straight nights against San Diego, on August 24 and 25. The Toreros were the WCC Champions last year, reaching the NCAA second round and finishing ranked 13th in the final AVCA coaches poll.
One week later Washington will play host to a new installment of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge. Colorado will be the other Pac-12 team coming to town, and the Huskies and Buffs will take on Iowa and Illinois. It will be Iowa first for UW on Aug. 31 and on Sept. 1, the Huskies will get a shot at a Fighting Illini squad that upset them in the NCAA second round to end the 2017 season.
All four of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge matches will be televised by Pac-12 Networks in the first 2018 broadcasts of the year for the conference.
The Huskies will then play the next two weeks on the road, traveling to Pittsburgh on Sept. 7-8 to take on Kennesaw State, Dayton, and the host Pitt Panthers. Pitt advanced to the NCAA second round a year ago and received votes in the final poll, while Kennesaw State also qualified for the NCAA tourney as champions of the ASUN conference. Dayton is also an NCAA tourney regular which posted a 23-8 record last season.
The following week takes the Huskies to Boise, Idaho to take on the Broncos on Sept. 13, then a double-header against CSUN and Sacramento State on the 14th. Sacramento State was the Big Sky regular season champion last year, going 27-10, while Boise State tied for third in the Mountain West with a 10-8 record, 17-13 overall.
Conference play begins in Seattle for the Dawgs against the WSU Cougars on Sept. 20. That will be the first of the 20 match conference schedule, of which 17 will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
Last year the Pac-12 sent nine teams to the NCAA tournament, eight of which advanced to the second round, including the Huskies for the 16th year in a row.
