Huskies Roar Back For 3-2 Extra-Innings Comeback Over Alabama
May 25, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #5 Washington Huskies defeated the #12 Alabama Crimson Tide in dramatic fashion, walking off with a 3-2 win in extra innings to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Super Regionals series. Sis Bates hit a two-run single in the seventh to tie the game up, with Taylor Van Zee's single to center scoring Kelly Burdick in the ninth to give Washington the win. The Huskies are 48-8 on the season now and one win away from a second consecutive Women's College World Series trip.
Gabbie Plain earned her 20th win of the season with a complete game, allowing only three hits all game and just one in the first six innings. Plain struck out nine in the game, retiring ten in a row at one point and finishing the game allowing only one baserunner to reach scoring position after the second inning.
Despite allowing just one hit in the first six innings, Plain was faced with a deficit as Alabama scored two on a two-out double in the second. The freshman rebounded from that double to retired 15 of the next 16 batters as Washington tried to chip away and tie the game.
The Huskies first threatened in the third, with Taryn Atlee and Bates each reaching base, only to be stranded. Julia DePonte nearly tied the game in the fifth with a ripped line drive down the first-base line that was snagged by a diving first baseman, ending the inning and leaving Burdick and Van Zee stranded.
The tying rally began with an Atlee walk leading off the seventh. Van Zee fell behind 0-2 after that, only to fight back to a full count and rip a double to centerfield, putting two runners in scoring position.
Bates took the first pitch she saw straight up the middle after that to tie the game, bouncing it into centerfield to allow both runs to cross with ease.
Burdick's speed was pivotal in Washington's winning run, with the senior reaching via error in the ninth. After Burdick stole second, Van Zee's third hit of the day, a single to center, scored her to end the game in a Husky victory.
