Mooney, Asoumanaki, Farooq Sweep Pac-12 Awards
May 23, 2018 | Women's Rowing
Washington swept the Pac-12's Athlete, Newcomer and Coach of the Year awards as the conference office announced its All-Pac-12 Women's Rowing Team.
UW senior Brooke Mooney was named the conference's Athlete of the Year, while freshman Sofia Asoumanaki earned Newcomer of the Year. Second-year head coach Yasmin Farooq was honored as Coach of the Year for the second season in a row after the Huskies swept the Pac-12 Championships again in 2018.
In addition to those honors, four Huskies were named to the All-Pac-12 team: Mooney, junior Marlee Blue, senior Phoebe Marks-Nicholes and sophomore Tabea Schendekehl.
Mooney, a senior from Peru, Vt., rowed in the varsity eight in every event of the season and leads the No. 1-ranked Huskies into the 2018 NCAA Championships this weekend in Sarasota, Fla. Also a member of the NCAA-champion varsity eight in 2017, Mooney will train with the U.S. National Team following graduation this spring.
Asoumanaki, from Athens, Greece, worked her way into the varsity eight, helping it to the conference title. The 6-foot-3 freshman was a 2016 Olympian in the double sculls.
Farooq, who was also Pac-10 Coach of the Year while at Stanford in 2009, was named the league's coach of the year for the second straight season.
Blue, a junior from Seattle, also rowed in the varsity eight at Pac-12 Championships. A 2015 World Junior Champion, she has been invited to the Under-23 National Team camp this summer.
Marks-Nicholes, a senior from Seattle, will also compete for a spot on the U.S. Under-23 team. The Husky coxswain has been in the varsity eight for every race of 2017 and 2018, winning Pac-12 championships in each of those seasons, along with the 2017 NCAA title.
Schendekehl, from Dortmund, Germany, has also rowed in the varsity eight in every regatta of 2018. As a freshman in 2017, she made the varsity eight, winning at NCAAs, and then earned the bronze medal in the German eight at Under-23 World Championships last summer.
