Washington Adds Eight to 2018 Squad
May 23, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE – Washington Men's Soccer Head Coach Jamie Clark announced the addition of eight new players for the 2018 season including seven incoming freshmen and one NCAA Division I transfer. The class feature five local players from the Sounders and Crossfire US Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) teams.
"We are excited to welcome in another nationally ranked recruiting class that has its roots deeply entrenched in the state of Washington," Clark said. "Talented local guys that have a pride in the Purple and Gold are who we want to work with. These young men have grown up watching our program and understand the commitment and dedication we ask of our players. They are ready to put in the necessary work, and are confident in their own abilities which I'm positive will help keep our program near the top of the college soccer landscape."
The class features a trio of Sounders Academy players: midfielders Dylan Teves and Raul "Gio" Miglietti and goalkeeper Sam Fowler.
Teves, an attacking midfielder from Kailua, Hawaii, is one of two non-professional players consistently playing for Sounders FC 2 of the USL. So far this season, the 17-year-old has appeared in eight matches, making six starts for the squad. He also has five goals in 24 games with his Sounders 19s Academy Team.
"Teves is a brilliant soccer player that feels the game very well," Clark said. "He can play any of the front six positions and this versatility should help him find a way to contribute early on at UW. He has the rare ability to both be a 1v1 guy who also takes great care of the ball. I think Husky fans will really enjoy watching him play."
Miglietti, a 6-1 midfielder who hails from Hawthorne, Calif., has started in 28 games this season with Sounders Academy. His work in midfield has helped lead the team to third place in the Northwest Division with the Sounders currently holding a spot in this year's USSDA playoffs. Prior to joining the Sounders Academy, he played as part of the Pateadores Academy in Southern California.
"Gio is a hard-nosed player that can play any central position from target forward to central defender," Clark said. "He's played at two great clubs growing up (Pateadores and Sounders), so has been very well coached. Once we find his best position, he'll work tirelessly to make it his own."
Fowler, a local product from Issaquah, is a talented keeper who has represented the US Youth National Team on numerous occasions along with his time at the Sounders Academy. Fowler was one of two goalkeepers on the US U19 squad which recently placed third at the Slovakia Cup. In that competition, he appeared in two games including a four-save shutout against Azerbaijan to help the US secure third place. Fowler has appeared in 23 matches with the Sounders U19 team this season after starting 30 matches for the U16 team last season.
"Sam is arguably the best goalkeeper in the 2018 recruiting class," Clark said. "He's got experience at the USL and international levels, so will come in confident and ready to play. Sam is a keeper that loves to be involved in the game and lives for the big moments."
The class also features a pair of Crossfire Academy players in defenders Ethan Bartlow and Charlie Ostrem.
Bartlow, who comes to Montlake from Woodinville, is ranked as a four-star recruit by topdrawersoccer.com and ranked No. 51 in the national club soccer Top 150. He has started 27 games this season for Crossfire, scoring seven goals. In addition to his club play, Bartlow was a call up for the US National Camp preparing for the U17 World Cup.
"Ethan is a fantastic central defender that is dominant on both sides of the ball," Clark said. "His range of passing is incredible and he's dominant in the air. Ethan's time with the US U17 national team saw him handle many of the top attacking players in the world, so he will be ready to play against any of the top attacking players he faces this fall."
Ostrem, a defender from Shoreline, has started each of the last four seasons in club play, tallying 17 goals over that stretch. He helped Crossfire to the national club quarterfinals last season, assisting on the goal to help the team reach the quarterfinal game. Thanks to the defensive work of Ostrem and Bartlow, Crossfire Academy currently sit in first place of the Northwest Division of the USSDA.
"Charlie is a left-sided guy that can play as a fullback or as a wide midfielder," Clark said. "He serves a brilliant ball and is athletic enough to go end line to end line. Charlie is not as well-known as some of our guys on the national scene, but we know he's going to be a huge player at UW, as his talent and drive are second to none. He was the top left-sided player we saw in the 2018 recruiting class, and we are delighted he chose to stay close to home."
The class also features three other players from outside of the Seattle-area.
Daniel Ribas is an experienced NCAA Division I midfielder who transfers to UW after two seasons at Creighton. Ribas, a 5-10 junior from Guayaquil, Ecuador, appeared in 11 matches over his last two seasons with the Bluejays, including each of the team's three NCAA tournament contests in 2016.
"Daniel is a player who arrives here from one of the top programs in the country," said Clark. "He's a very savvy midfielder and has the ability to be creative, but also the industry to cover ground and make plays defensively. We believe Daniel fits well with our style of play and will boost our midfield. We are excited to get him here to Seattle and have him become a Husky."
Sam Tessler, a 6-2 defender from Palos Verdes, Calif, heads to UW from the Pateadores SC club team, where he has played for three years. Over his last two seasons with Pateadores, Tessler has appeared in 64 matches, making 62 starts and tallying a pair of goals. He is currently the captain of his team and helped lead them to the best record in the Southwest and the third-best overall in the USSDA West Division.
"Sam is an athletic defender that can play central or out wide," Clark said. "He has led his Pateadores club team to one of the top three spots in the country this year. This is a testament to his leadership and presence in the defense. His toughness and steady demeanor will make him a mainstay on the Husky backline in years to come."
Rounding out the group is Michael Rojas from Royal City, Washington. Rojas, plays high school soccer at Royal High School where he has helped his high school team reach the State regionals in each of his three seasons. In addition to his High School team he plays his club soccer for Washington East B99. Last season, his club team reached club nationals in Denver.
"Michael is a really fun attacking player to watch," Clark said. "He's a lefty that has moments of Maradona as he takes on five guys at a time. He has the ability to play wide or as an attacking midfielder, so it will be fun to watch him develop."
Washington's recruiting class is ranked No. 10 by TopDrawerSoccer.com, the fourth straight year that UW has had a top-15 rated class.
The Huskies finished the 2017 season with a 12-7-1 overall record, reaching the NCAA tournament for the second-straight season and fifth time in seven seasons under Coach Clark.
