Huskies’ Two Joes Lift UW To 7-2 Win Over Utes
May 18, 2018 | Baseball
SALT LAKE CITY – The Huskies two-headed, Joe-monster struck again on Friday, this time rampaging through Salt Lake City to keep Washington's post-season hopes alive.
Joe DeMers pitched his third complete game of the season and Joe Wainhouse unleashed his seventh home run in eight games as Washington beat Utah, 7-2, at Smith's Ballpark to clinch their fourth-straight Pac-12 series.
Wainhouse struck out with the bases loaded in his first two at bats, but picked up hits in his final three, including a three-run, no-doubt, monster home run to right field in the ninth inning that gave the Huskies a 7-1 lead. It was the third-straight game started by DeMers that Wainhouse has hit a homer, and not surprisingly, DeMers has won all three of those starts.
DeMers (6-3) needed just 109 pitches to record 27 outs. He allowed a run in the first inning and another in the ninth when he was nearing the end of his rope. But, DeMers got Chandler Anderson to ground into a game-ending double play to secure the win for the Huskies and notch his fourth career complete game.
Washington improved to 27-22 overall, and perhaps more importantly 17-9 in Pac-12 play. The Huskies are sitting in sole possession of third in the Conference standings, with UCLA yet to start its weekend series against Oregon.
For his third-straight start, DeMers' teammates staked him to an early lead. Today, before he even threw his first pitch, he had a 3-0 advantage.
The Huskies loaded the bases on Utah starter Josh Tedeschi (1-10) before the southpaw could record an out and took a 1-0 lead on a RBI groundout by Levi Jordan. AJ Graffanino followed with a clutch, two-out single that scored two more runs.
Utah got a run back in its half of the first on a lead-off double by DeShawn Keirsay, Jr. and a single by No. 2 hitter Oliver Dunn to cut the Huskies' lead to 3-1, but from there DeMers shut down the Utes' bats.
DeMers allowed a single in the second inning, but would not give up another hit until the seventh. At one stretch, he retired 12-straight Utes before issuing a four-pitch walk to Keirsay Jr. in the sixth inning.
"They're a good fastball hitting team, so I had to get ahead early in the count and mix in a lot of off-speed pitches. It worked out pretty well," DeMers said following his 43rd career UW start, which moves him into a tie with Sean White for fourth all-time among Husky hurlers.
The Huskies got their fourth run in the sixth inning on a Christian Jones sacrifice fly before adding three more on Wainhouse's homer off of Jacob Rebar. It was Wainhouse's 13th homer of the year and gave DeMers the final push he was looking for to make it through the game.
"That gave us a lot of breathing room and allowed me to pound the zone a lot more, which is huge for me," DeMers said of Wainhouse's blast. "I was going to finish the game no matter what, for sure."
Utah started the ninth by putting the first two runners on the corners on a Keirsey Jr. triple and a hit by pitch, putting into doubt if DeMers would complete the game. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Erick Migueles singled home a run and the Utes had two runners on base. But, DeMers got Anderson to hit an 0-2 pitch into the ground to Levi Jordan at shortstop, who started a 6-4-3 double play.
The Huskies are now 8-3 over their last 11 Pac-12 games and firmly in the NCAA's crosshairs with 17 conference wins. But DeMers insists the team is not focused about the post-season at the moment.
"I think we're doing really well right now, but we're doing exactly what we need to do. We're not thinking about the post-season and taking it one pitch at a time," he said. "We'll end up there if that's how we keep approaching each game."
The Huskies and Utes wrap up their series on Saturday, once again playing at 10:30 a.m. to accommodate the Salt Lake City Buzz' evening game.
