Big Inning Dooms Huskies In 5-3 Loss To #2 Oregon
April 29, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE β The #4 Washington Huskies put together a rally late but still took the loss, falling 5-3 to the #2 Oregon Ducks in the series finale Sunday. Trysten Melhart went 3-for-3 in the game, driving in two runs. Taylor Van Zee, Sis Bates, and Julia DePonte all had multiple hits in the game as well. Washington falls to 41-8 on the year with three games left in the regular season.
Gabbie Plain took the loss in the game, just her fourth this season. Plain started the game with a 1-2-3 first that include two strikeouts, but a big third inning by Oregon ended the freshman's day.
Kristin Cochran and Samantha Manti pitched the rest of the game for Washington, shutting out the Ducks the rest of the way. Cochran allowed only two hits in her three innings, while Manti allowed one hit in one scoreless frame.
The Huskies nearly scored on a DePonte double in the first before breaking the tie in the second. Nawai Kaupe doubled on a sinking flyball to center in the second, one of Washington's four extra-base hits in the game. Melhart bounced a single up the middle and into center to allow Kaupe to score and take a 1-0 lead.
Oregon put up five runs in the third inning, the only inning in the game the Ducks were able to score.
In the sixth, Melhart picked up her second RBI with a single to right. That scored Amirah Milloy, who had pinch-run for Emma Helm after a walk and reached third on a screaming single to right by Noelle Hee.
Down three runs, Washington rallied again in the seventh, beginning with a leadoff double by Van Zee. Bates singled to score Van Zee but a double play ended the threat.
