Dawgs Upset 13th-Ranked Cal At Alki Beach
April 14, 2018 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – The first ever Pac-12 North Invitational got a full dose of Pacific Northwest weather today at Alki Beach, but the Husky beach volleyball team weathered the conditions to earn a big win over 13th-ranked California followed by a loss to fourth-ranked USC.
The five-team event features the Huskies, Bears, Trojans, as well as Oregon and Stanford who the Huskies will face on Sunday. It's the first trip to Seattle for the USC, Cal and Stanford beach programs. The Pac-12 North Invitational lets the conference rivals sharpen up before the Pac-12 Championships coming up in two weeks at Stanford.
The Huskies were able to flip the script on the 13th-ranked Bears in the first match of the day. Cal had won 5-0 over the Dawgs back on March 24, but UW won the top three matches today to come out on top, 3-2. Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye finished off a three-set win with the match on the line.
Schwan and Julye also had a three set win against USC in Washington's second match, but the defending NCAA Champion Trojans won the remainder of the matches for a 4-1 victory.
Head Coach Steve Whitaker said the Huskies knew what they were in for with the weather. "The girls knew we were going to get it, so I think they did a good job of embracing it and they just went after it," he said. "It felt really good to get after Cal, they had our number the first time so I loved the way that we responded to that. It was a lot of fun, it came down to the twos and Destiny and Courtney pulled two really good ones out today. I thought they played awesome."
Vs. California
Against the Golden Bears, the Huskies picked up the first point with a win in the top spot, as Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner earned a close first set and then pulled away in the second against Gaffney/Lindahl of Cal, 22-20, 21-12.
Shayne McPherson and Carly DeHoog then made it 2-0 with a 21-16, 21-17 win at No. 3 against Schafer/Merino of Cal.
But Cal was in control of the fourth and fifth spots. The Huskies mixed their lineup up this week, putting Anna Crabtree and Kara Bajema together at No. 4. They were right on the verge in both sets, but fell 22-20, 21-19 to Bark/Dueck. Then Samantha Drechsel and Natalie Robinson played their first match together at No. 5 and came up short, 21-18, 21-15 to Campbell/Micheletti.
That left it up to Schwan and Julye, who won their first set against Inman and Mirkovic, 21-15, but then lost 13-21 in the second set. Schwan and Julye won the first five points of the third set but the Bears team came right back with five-straight of their own. The Huskies never trailed, however, and finished off the win with a kill from Schwan for a 15-12 victory.
Vs. USC
The Trojans took a 2-0 lead with identical 21-11, 21-15 victories at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots, but the Huskies looked to have a window to get back into it. Drechsel and Robinson had lost their first set at No. 5 against Kaiser/Belton, but they had a set point at 20-19 in set two trying to force a third with the top two matches already starting third sets. But the USC pair saved it and came back to win 23-21 to clinch the match.
Anderson and Gardiner had won the first set against USC's No. 1 team of Graudina and Bustamante, 22-20, but the Trojans came back to win second set, 21-14. It was 7-7 in the third set but the Trojans made a run and closed it out, 15-9.
Julye and Schwan lost their first set, 18-21, after falling into a big early hole against Dennis/Dorn, but they won the second set, 21-17, and then completed a 2-0 day with a 15-9 third set win to get the Huskies on the board.
"USC is always going to have good depth," said Whitaker. "They're good top to bottom, so you have to match their depth. I thought we played some really good volleyball, and we have to keep getting the one-percent better and it's starting to show. We gave Hawaii good matches, and gave USC a really good fight, so every match is there for the taking. It comes down to the little things that aren't so little."
Tomorrow the Huskies will play Oregon at 11 a.m. and then finish against 14th-ranked Stanford at 2 p.m.
