SEATTLE – Washington's big three are bound for Texas and the NCAA Indoor Championships this Friday and Saturday, ready to wrap up the indoor season with national titles up for grabs. Chase Smith, Colby Gilbert, and Amy-Eloise Neale are all returning to the NCAA Indoor meet for the second-straight year, and for Gilbert, the fourth-straight run of his outstanding career.
Texas A&M will host the two-day championship at Gilliam Indoor Stadium, and ESPN3 will stream the action online. Smith will be Washington's one competitor on Friday in College Station, as the men's pole vault starts at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time. On Saturday, Gilbert and Neale will run back-to-back in the 3,000-meter finals, with the men's race at 4:10 p.m. Pacific and the women's at 4:25 p.m.
Smith is back in the mix with the NCAA's best after tying for 11th at last year's NCAA Indoor meet. He then had his outdoor season interrupted by an appendectomy, but is fully back and better than ever this season, evidenced by the 18-1 PR he cleared at the UW Indoor Open. Smith also won the MPSF title for the second straight year. He ranks ninth entering the meet and will be looking for his first All-America First Team honor, given to the top-eight finishers in each event.
Gilbert ranks fourth in the 3,000-meter field going into his fourth-straight NCAA Championship in that event. He ran 7:49.42 to win the Husky Classic and qualify. Gilbert was 13th in the 3k as a redshirt freshman in 2015, then eighth-place in 2016, and up to fifth-place last year.
Neale will run the 3k for the first time at NCAAs after placing ninth in the indoor mile final last year. Neale was the 2017 NCAA Cross Country runner-up. She opened her indoor season with her qualifying 3k time of 9:01.96 at the UW Indoor Preview. She will look to extend her streak of finishing in the top-10 at NCAA Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor championships to five in a row going back to the 2016 NCAA Cross Country meet.
