Alvelo Dominates #9 Arizona In 2-0 Win
March 25, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE β The #1 Washington Huskies swept the #9 Arizona Wildcats behind a dominant performance in the circle by Taran Alvelo, winning 2-0. Noelle Hee and Kirstyn Thomas drove in Washington's two runs, with Hee hitting her fourth home run of the season. The Huskies move to 32-2 on the year now and are 4-2 in Pac-12 play after the series sweep.
Alvelo was absolutely unhittable almost the entire game. The junior allowed only one hit, a line-drive single in the first inning that was just out of her reach off the bat. Alvelo would retire 20 in a row after that hit, with only six balls leaving the infield all game.
Alvelo struck out the side in the second inning and would end the day with eight strikeouts. She also punched out two in the fifth en route to her 16th win, a total that is tied for the national lead.
Taylor McQuillin would take the loss for Arizona, her fourth loss of the year and third of the weekend. McQuillin allowed multiple earned runs in all three games of the series after entering the game having done so in just one of her 21 appearances before this weekend.
Hee's home run in the second inning put Washington on top for good. The California native took a 2-2 pitch deep to right-center, landing in the bleachers as Hee jogged around the bases for a 1-0 lead.
Washington would add another run in the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles. Sis Bates hit a curving line drive that landed on the foul line just past first base and bounced away into foul territory for a leadoff double, then scored standing up on Thomas' hard double off the wall in deep right-center.
Alvelo would end the game with two weak groundouts and a three-pitch strikeout, locking up Washington's fourth Pac-12 win.
