Helm Homer, Atlee Double Key Extra-Inning 4-3 Husky Win
March 24, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – For the second day in a row, the #1 Washington Huskies won in dramatic fashion, winning in extras 4-3 over the #9 Arizona Wildcats to clinch a series win. The Huskies once again ended the game with a walk-off hit, this time with Taryn Atlee doubling off the wall to score Emma Helm from first. Washington improves to 31-2 on the year and 3-2 in the Pac-12.
Gabbie Plain made the start for Washington and allowed only one hit in the first four innings of the game. She would end the day with a no-decision despite striking out seven and allowing no walks through six innings of work.
Taran Alvelo earned her 15th win of the season with two near-perfect innings of relief, allowing one baserunner via walk and striking out four.
The Huskies put two runs on the board before Arizona could even record an out, beginning with Taylor Van Zee's stand-up triple off the left-center wall. Kirstyn Thomas would bring Van Zee home with a single to right for an early lead. Sis Bates, who had walked earlier in the inning, would score when Julia DePonte sent a hot shot on the ground into center for a 2-0 lead.
Arizona's only scoring came on a three-run homer in the sixth inning following two weak singles that found the hole on the left side. Four of Arizona's eight baserunners came in the sixth inning as the Wildcats took a 3-2 lead.
Despite ace Taylor McQuillin taking over in the circle for Arizona, Emma Helm needed little time to tie the game back up. Helm fought deep into a full count, then got behind the ball for her first career home run. Helm's bomb landed well beyond the fence in left-center, making it 3-3.
Alvelo made short work of Arizona in each of her two innings of relief, starting her appearance with a three-pitch strikeout. A walk in the eighth would be the only tarnish on the junior's appearance.
After scoring the tying run in the sixth, Helm would score the winning run two innings later after a leadoff walk. Atlee ripped a stinging flyball off the wall in right that just missed landing in the seats. Helm was running at full tilt from the second the ball left the bat and scored from first, sliding in just ahead of the throw to win the game.
