Huskies Win Extra-Inning Thriller 2-1 On DePonte Walkoff
March 23, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #1 Washington Huskies won a walk-off thriller Friday night, defeating the #9 Arizona Wildcats 2-1 in eight innings. Taran Alvelo struck out a career-high 14 batters in the game, while Julia DePonte hit her tenth home run of the season in the eighth to end the game in spectacular fashion.
Alvelo was absolutely amazing from the get-go, retiring 13 in a row after allowing a leadoff walk. She would not allow a hit until the sixth inning when Arizona hit a one-out home run to take its only lead of the game. Alvelo would end the game allowing only two hits while picking up her 14th win.
After falling behind 1-0, the Huskies moved Kelly Burdick into scoring position when Taylor Van Zee worked a full-count walk with two outs. Sis Bates wasted no time tying the game as she laced a single into leftfield on the first pitch of the at-bat. Burdick was flying at full speed from the swing of the bat and scored standing up to tie it.
Alvelo locked down the eighth with two more strikeouts, matching and breaking her career-high for strikeouts in a game while allowing just one hit on an infield single.
DePonte then ended the game with a blast to left that bounced high off the light pole for a no-doubt game-winner. It was DePonte's tenth home run of the season and sixth in her last 14 games.

Notes
- Alvelo (8.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 14 K) now leads the Pac-12 in strikeouts after recording her ninth double-digit strikeout game of the year.
- Burdick (1x3, R) now has ten steals on the year, a new single-season high.
- DePonte (1x3, R, HR, RBI, BB) became the second Husky to hit 10+ homers this year, making UW the only team in the nation with two players to reach that mark.
