February 13, 2018 | Women's Golf
PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The University of Washington Women's Golf team posted a ninth place finish at the Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge on Tuesday, concluding their spring season opening tournament at 42-over 894 (297-299-298). The Huskies were led by junior Sarah Rhee who finished tied for 16th.
"I was proud of our effort throughout the weekend and it's early in the spring so we got a good look at where we're at that's what you want to get out of the first spring tournament against a very talented field," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Sarah played exceptionally well over the last two days and to have four of our five climb the leaderboard on the final day was good to see."
Rhee climbed 17 spots during the final 18 holes with her third round score 1-over 72. She opened the day with birdies on four of her first seven holes. Following three bogeys on the back end of her front nine, she responded with a 2-over to bump her three-round total to 7-over 220 (76-72-72) for her fourth career top 20 finish.
Junior Wenyung Keh also moved up on the final day, jumping five spots to finish tied for 18th at 8-over 221 (73-74-74). After starting with a bogey on her second hole, Keh responded with a birdie on the par-3 11th hole to finish her front nine at 1-over. She echoed that on her back nine and despite getting to four-over at one point, closed her round with a one-under over the final three holes.
Sophomore Karen Miyamoto placed tied for 49th, climbing five spots as well on Tuesday thanks to her final round score of 5-over 76. She finished with an overall score of 15-over 228 (75-77-76). Miyamoto opened the day with a birdie on her first hole but then went five-over to finish the day.
Rounding out scoring was junior Julianne Alvarez who finished with a 19-over 232 (72-77-82). Freshman Rino Sasaki climbed up seven spots on the board to finish tied for 69th at 20-over 233.
Washington next hits the course on Feb. 26 at the Bruin Wave Invitational.
