Kirstyn Thomas Named ESPNW Player Of The Week
February 14, 2018 | Softball
BRISTOL, Conn. - After leading the Husky offense to a NCAA-best 70 runs over opening weekend, Kirstyn Thomas was named the ESPNW Softball Player of the Week. Thomas was also named the Pac-12 Player of the Week after hitting .688/.737/1.813 over five games.
Thomas is leading the nation in home runs (5), RBI (16), and slugging percentage (1.813) after the first week of play. The senior is also second in the nation in runs scored with 13, behind only fellow Husky Sis Bates. Thomas' five home runs through the first five games of the season tie the school record for most home runs through the initial five games, set by Taylor Smith in 2011.
The Texan entered this season with a single-game high of three RBI: Thomas reached or surpassed that mark in four of the first five games of the season, highlighted by a six-RBI game against Bradley. She scored multiple runs every game and had multiple extra-base hits in three games. Thomas has homered in four consecutive games as well and even picked up two stolen bases, putting her one off her career high for stolen bases in a single season.
This is the first national player of the week award for the Huskies since Taran Alvelo won ESPNW and NFCA Player of the Week in early February last season. The last batter to win a national weekly award for the Huskies was Ali Aguilar during her All-American 2016 season.
