UW Sits in 11th Heading Into Final Round at Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge
February 12, 2018 | Women's Golf
PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The University of Washington women's golf team sits in 11th place following round two at the stacked Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge on Monday as it shot a 15-over 299 to move its two round total to 28-over 596 (297-299). Junior Wenyung Keh continues to lead the Dawgs as she is tied for 23rd at 5-over 147 at the par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
"Today was better in a lot of ways as we had 13 birdies and one eagle from Julianne who holed out from 110 yards on hole 11," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We did still suffer from too many poor decisions and unforced errors which cost us in conditions which were extremely windy and rather cold for California. We've got one more round tomorrow and I believe we will come out strong."
Keh, ranked 40th by Golfstat, knocked in two birdies and after starting her front nine at 2-over, improved on the back nine finishing her final eight holes at even par. She sits eight strokes off the lead, held by Arizona State's Olivia Mehaffey, at 5-over 147 (73-74).
Junior Sarah Rhee had a big climbing day as she jumped 20 spots into a tie for 33rd. Rhee opened the day on hole 10 and went even par through four holes then birdied hole 14 before following four more pars. She followed that with three birdies on her back nine to finish with a 1-over 72, a four-stroke improvement from her first round. She is now at 6-over 148 (76-72).
"I was really proud of how Sarah competed today," added Mulflur. "She is in a good place right now and just focusing on preparing for the next shot she's about to hit. Nothing else matters which is allowing her to play some really great golf."
Alvarez started the day with a bang as she eagled her second hole of the day. On the par-4 11th, she holed out from 110 yards on her second strike for her first eagle of the season. She ended up adding three birdies throughout the rest of the day but eight blemishes were costly as she finished the day at 6-over 77 to move her two-round score to 8-over 150 (73-77).
Sophomore Karen Miyamoto also had a tougher second round finishing with a 6-over 77 to push her overall score to 10-over 152 (75-77) which places her tied for 54th rounding out UW's scoring on Monday. Freshman Rino Sasaki is tied for 76th at 15-over 157 (81-76)after climbing 11 spots on Tuesday thanks to a 5-over 76, which was a five stroke improvement from round one.
The Huskies conclude their first spring event on Tuesday, teeing off at 8:30 with Texas, Baylor and Tennessee.
