Thomas, Alvelo Named Pac-12 Players Of The Week
February 13, 2018 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO - After leading the Huskies to a 5-0 start last weekend, the Pac-12 Conference named Kirstyn Thomas and Taran Alvelo the Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is the first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor of Thomas' career and the fourth Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor of Alvelo's.
Thomas hit .688/.737/1.813 over the Huskies' first five games of the season, scoring 13 runs and driving in 16 in that time. The senior scored multiple runs in every game and drove in multiple runs in four of the five games, including a career-high six RBI against Bradley. Thomas also had her first career multi-home run performance in that game, going 3-for-4 with a double and two homers.
Thomas tied the school record for home runs through the first five games of the season, matching Taylor Smith's 2011 mark of five. She also had three doubles, recording multiple extra-base hits in three of five games. The Texas native even picked up two stolen bases, putting her just one away from her career-high mark for a single season already. Entering this season, Thomas' career high for RBI in a single game was three: she reached or surpassed that mark four times in the five games of opening weekend.
After her impressive opening weekend, Thomas now leads the nation in home runs, slugging percentage, and RBI and is second in runs scored to her teammate, Sis Bates.
For Alvelo, it was a week of near-perfect play in the circle. The junior did not allow a run to score en route to 14.0 scoreless innings, the second-longest scoreless streak of her career and just 0.2 innings away from tying her career high, set April 22-29 of last season. She struck out 27 batters in her three appearances as well for the most strikeouts in a three-game span of any Husky since Bryana Walker's 29 from February 16-22, 2014.
With 11 strikeouts against Bradley and 10 against Miami (OH), Alvelo also put together her first back-to-back double-digit strikeout performances. Alvelo leads the Pac-12 in strikeouts and is one of five pitchers in the conference with a spotless ERA. Alvelo's opposing batting average of .089 is second in the conference.
Washington will continue its season on the road this week, heading to Texas to take part in the Bearkat Softball Classic. The Huskies will start that five-game tournament with a 10:15 am PT game against Northern Colorado on Friday, February 16.
