Dawgs Tied for Ninth After Opening Round at Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge
February 11, 2018 | Women's Golf
PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The University of Women's golf team started their spring campaign on Sunday at the prestigious Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge and after 18 holes sit tied for ninth at 13-over 297. The Dawgs were led by experienced juniors Wenyung Keh and Julianne Alvarez, who both shot a 2-over 73 to tie for 19th.
"I was proud of our effort today, especially for our first spring tournament," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We had a bit of a tough start but they kept their attitude and mindset in the right place. We just didn't make very many putts at all today. Only having five birdies on the day is a small number for us but we plan on dropping some putts tomorrow, shaking off some of the rust and are looking forward to getting back out on the course for round two."
Keh and Alvarez both sit five strokes off the lead with their 2-over 73's. Keh started the front nine with a 1-under after posting a birdie on the par-5 16th hole before making the turn. She ran into some errors on her back nine with three blemishes on holes two, three and five to finish with a 2-over.
Alvarez's start was a little shakier as she double bogeyed her opening hole, which was hole 10, but she responded by posting even par's over the next six holes and birdied the par-4 hole 17 followed by a par on 18 to finish her first nine at 1-over. She copied that score on the next nine holes with just one blemish on her first hole after the turn to finish in tied for 19th.
Sophomore Karen Miyamoto, who is ranked 91st via Golfstat, was next on the scoring chart for UW, as she is tied for 39th with a 4-over 75. Miyamoto was one of three Dawgs who birdied the par-3 hole 15 on UW's front nine but it was unfortunately surrounded by bogeys on holes 14 and 16. She finished both nines at 2-over 38.
Rounding out scoring in the five count four tournament at Palos Verdes Golf Club was junior Sarah Rhee who posted a 5-over 76 to tie for 53rd. Freshman Rino Sasaki was next with her 10-over 81 to tie for 87th.
Arizona holds the team lead at 1-over 285 while Arizona State's Olivia Mehaffey has the individual lead at 3-under 68. She was one of seven players to post a sub-par round over the first 18 holes.
Washington starts round two of the 54-hole event Monday morning at 9:22 a.m. paired with Duke, Texas and Ohio State.
